Trusting the Process: Embracing Challenges for Growth
“Trust the Process” became a popular phrase in sports over the past 10 years, especially when
teams faced rebuilding years. The Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Astros, enduring tough
seasons while reshaping their teams, urged fans to trust the long-term vision. Leaders
reassured investors and supporters: “Things may seem bleak now, but we have a plan in place
to make it better.”
This idea extends beyond sports—it applies to business, organizational change, and even
personal challenges. Focusing on what you can control—the process—can be more productive
than fixating on the final outcome.
The Power of Process
In 2014, the University of Michigan faced a unique dilemma: a $135 million donation for the
expansion of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business was blocked by a 250-year-old burr oak
tree, the Tappan Oak. This beloved tree, a symbol of strength and resilience, had to be moved
to make way for progress.
The need for a clear process became evident. The massive oak had to be carefully relocated,
and this would require meticulous planning, resources, and a thoughtful approach.
Planning the Process
Successful projects start with defining clear goals, breaking them down into manageable steps,
and creating a timeline. For U-M, this meant moving the 500,000-pound oak 100 yards to a new
home. Environmental Design, Inc. (EDI), a professional tree-moving company from Tomball, TX,
was hired for the job. The move took months of preparation, beginning in July and ending in
October. EDI oversaw every detail, adjusting the process as needed for real-time challenges,
from budgets to schedules.
Through this careful process, the Tappan Oak was successfully relocated and continues to
thrive in its new location, a decade later.
Embrace the Process
Great leaders understand that the journey is just as important as the outcome. The method,
consistency, and learning along the way contribute to long-term success. Whether leading a
team or navigating a personal challenge, trusting the process helps create sustainable growth.
“Trust the Process” has become a mantra in many fields, from sports to fitness and art. In his
2017 album teaser, rapper Ace Hood captured it best: “Even when it’s tough, you keep on
pushing—that’s the concept.”
In every challenge, trust the process. It’s the path to growth and success.
