Why Your First 90 Days as a Leader Matter More Than You Think
Here’s something to think about, even if you might not want to. If you are in your first 90 days of being a new leader, you can bet on the fact that your team is watching you closely right now, even if it doesn’t feel like it.
They are watching you because in the first weeks and months of a new leadership role, people are forming opinions — about your fairness, your consistency, whether you’ll follow through, whether you can be trusted with hard things. Those opinions form fast, and they’re sticky. What you do (and don’t do) in this window shapes how your team sees you for a long time.
That’s not meant to add pressure. It’s meant to add clarity. You don’t need to have all the answers in your first 90 days. You just need to know what actually matters during this window of time and what doesn’t.
Small, consistent things build trust faster than big gestures. And a few early missteps, while uncomfortable, are rarely as damaging as new leaders fear.
