The Leadership Advice That Sounds Good but Doesn’t Actually Help

“Lead by example.” “Be authentic.” “Trust your gut.”

You’ve heard it all. It sounds wise. It fits nicely on a poster. And if you’re brand new to leading people, it’s almost useless.

Here’s why: this kind of advice describes an outcome, not an action. Nobody tells you how to lead by example when you’re not sure what example you’re even setting yet. Nobody explains what “trust your gut” means when your gut has zero leadership experience to draw from.

New leaders don’t need inspiration posters. They need something to actually do on a Tuesday morning when someone on their team is upset, underperforming, or asking a question they don’t know how to answer.

Many inspirational posters and short words of wisdom are great – it’s just not built for people just starting out. What actually helps looks a lot more specific, a lot more ordinary, and a lot less like a quote you’d frame.
