Three Signs Your New Leader Might Be Struggling (And Won’t Ask for Help)
If you’ve got someone on your team stepping into leadership for the first time, here’s something worth knowing: they probably won’t tell you when they’re struggling. Not because they don’t trust you, but because they don’t want to look like they can’t handle it.
Watch for this instead:
They’re doing too much themselves. Delegating feels risky when you’re new, so they quietly take everything back on rather than trust the team.
They avoid the hard conversations. Giving feedback, addressing a problem, saying no – these get put off, again and again, because nobody taught them how.
They go quiet in meetings. They wonder if their opinion still “counts” the same way now that they’re in charge.
None of these mean they’re failing. They mean they’re figuring it out and could use a hand.
If you’re overseeing someone’s leadership transition, there are simple, low-pressure ways to support them without hovering. We’ll cover them in our free webinar, Stepping Up: Practical Wisdom for First-Time Leaders. Register HERE.
