Quotable Quotations
Leaders Are Readers
As Harry Truman once said, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”
But workdays are longer today, and time seems scarcer than ever. Add to that the rise
of social media and we find that our attention spans are shrinking. If a story can’t be told
in less than 60 seconds, we’re quick to scroll and move on. As a result, we find the act
of reading novels, books, and articles for business or pleasure is fading
But as leaders, we must remind ourselves—and our teams—of the value found in
consuming written wisdom, even in small doses. One powerful way to do this is by
sharing short, impactful quotes.
The Power of Words
A well-timed quote can refocus a team member’s mindset or, in many cases, reset your
own. Over the years, I’ve made it a habit to use quotes in the workplace. Every 2-4
weeks, I put up new ones, inviting others to bring quotes they find inspiring to share with
the team. It’s a simple but effective way to tap into the wisdom of the ages and spark
meaningful conversations.
Here’s the thing: You don’t need to overthink it. Don’t worry about finding a fancy frame
or creating something elaborate. Just start by putting one up. Let the quote speak for
itself and work its magic within your team.
Aligning Quotes with Core Values
I find it especially powerful to use quotes that reinforce our core values and
organizational mission. Not all quotes will resonate or inspire equally. Ask yourself:
Does this quote inspire me? Does it help me reset when I’m feeling off balance? If the
answer is yes, it’s likely to do the same for others.
Great leaders leverage the wisdom of others to amplify their own vision and values. By
sharing quotes, we provide our teams with a steady stream of inspiration and
encouragement.
Two Quotes to Inspire Others
- “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your
charge.” – Simon Sinek - “The best way to inspire others is to first inspire yourself. When you lead by
example, others follow.” – Unknown
Take a moment today to share a quote that has inspired you. It could be the start of a
new habit that uplifts and motivates your entire team.
Go inspire. Share a quote.
