Making Your Values Visible

Making Your Values Visible

In the realm of leadership, words are undoubtedly important at any level of the organization. They inspire, motivate, and guide teams towards their objectives. However, it’s not just what leaders say that matters—it’s what they do. Actions speak volumes, especially when they reflect the values they profess to uphold. Living your values will translate into your leadership style.

When leaders consistently align their actions with their stated values, they foster an environment of trust and authenticity within their teams. Jim Rohn, renowned motivational speaker, and author, once said, “The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” These words encapsulate the essence of authentic leadership.

When leaders embody their values through their actions, they become beacons of integrity, earning the trust and respect of their team members. As James Cash Penney, the founder of JCPenney once said, “The best way to make a lasting impression is to be yourself. Authenticity matters, and it’s reflected in every decision you make.”

In my career in grounds management, I have seen several great leaders who modeled their values daily by picking up litter as they walked – on the clock or off. Leaders at all levels of the organization play a pivotal role in shaping organizational culture. By demonstrating professed values, each sets a clear example for their teams to follow. Actions that are consistent with stated values serve as a guidepost for decision-making and behavior across the organization.

Leaders who walk the walk inspire their teams to pursue shared goals with passion and dedication, creating a culture of excellence and accountability. The power of walking the walk helps foster trust and sets the bar for what is expected of all employees at any level. Let your actions speak louder than words and watch as your leadership transforms both yourself and those around you.

Go walk the walk, leaders.
