From Standards to Split-Second Decisions

Kenny and his crew had only a few hours to complete the job when the spring rain moved in. The pressure was on. Decisions don’t come scheduled in any profession; they come fast and messy.
Under pressure, people tend to react. In this case, reacting to the weather could mean missing a deadline – a standard his crew was known for. And reactions, more often than not, ignore standards.
Remembering his training, Kenny asked himself one simple question: “Does this decision reflect our standards—or just my immediate reaction?”
Kenny didn’t react; he acted with intention. He paused to assess the situation. With no lightning in the area, it was safe to continue. The rain would slow them down, but they could still meet the deadline. As a leader, Kenny chose to act with intention. They kept working and met the deadline.
Employee leadership development programs, when done well, build the discipline to act – not react. That pause—even 3–5 seconds—is where leadership lives.
