Being Coachable

Being Coachable

I sat on the bench in 10th grade, arms crossed, ignoring my basketball coach. I thought
I knew it all. I didn’t. I acted like a starter — and a spoiled one.

Looking back, I wasn’t coachable. And that’s the difference between someone who
stalls out and someone who levels up.

Coachable people don’t have all the answers — and they know it.
They stay humble, ask questions, and take feedback without getting defensive.

As Coach John Wooden said, “Everything we know we learned from someone else.”

Even if your boss isn’t perfect, you can still learn. Even a co-worker who messes up
teaches you something.

Coachable leaders:
-Stay curious, not cocky
-Listen more than they talk
-Take feedback as fuel, not as a fight
-Keep showing up ready to learn

Maya Angelou nailed it: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you
know better, do better.”

Thankfully, I have come a long way since 10th grade, and I’m not done learning. The
best leaders I’ve met — on job sites, campuses, and shops — all have one thing in
common – they stay coachable.

Keep learning. Keep growing.
