Do You Need Better People at Work?

Do You Need Better People at Work?

“The best leaders are insatiable learners. They’re never finished because they’re always learning.” ~Tom Peters

One of the best ideas ever given to me years ago was to take my direct reports, my leaders, away from the workplace for a training session. Little did I realize that those two days would be the foundation for changing our negative toxic culture to one that would lead us to making some incredible hires and eventually allow us to win 5 national championships in the landscape beautification category.

It was the middle of summer, and we were up to our ears in work orders and day-to-day maintenance. And it was not a good time to go to training, but it never feels like it is. Those two days gave me just enough time to work on our business and not in our business with my key leaders. We got just enough alignment to set some key standards and identify some basic goals. In two short days away, we were able to change our course and start growing our greatness. Today, the getaway for training is scheduled, on the calendar and planned for.

What are you doing to jump start a great new year with your leadership team? If you don’t plan for it and schedule the time on the calendar, chances are good it is not going to happen. As the one leading your team, no one is going to make you do training. It all starts with you.

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay.” ~Henry Ford

Go, train, repeat.
