Last week I got to spend some personal growth time with a group of facilities leaders in Florida. A big topic was leadership and how to grow those around you. Most people agreed it is important to provide training and growth opportunities, but there was a consensus that there were some barriers to doing it. There is never enough time, it’s boring, and it’s something that never seems to have any good, practical content.
As a department leader, I used to only focus on tactical challenges, schedules, and project management. I problem solved; it is what good leaders do. Through dealing with drama and high levels of negativity, I realized I had to change the way I was leading. I knew it was important, but I stayed busy, so I did not have to deal with it. Being busy is an enemy of doing what is right. Doing what is right, focusing on your team is really a matter of you choosing to make it a priority.

As far as content goes, look no further than your personal experiences and what helped you. If personal growth is important to your career and development, try sharing that with your leadership circle. Read a book together, watch a video, go see a speaker, but always facilitate questions to reflect on the learning. It is a great way to develop your people ‘s decision making skills.

I have learned great leaders give their people the time and opportunity to grow personally, allowing them to challenge their own mindset. Why not create a time where your leaders can grow together, not just talk strategy and logistics? Leaders set the ceiling for learning and growth, and we can all push it upwards by using part of our time to GROW. It has been a time investment I have never regretted because it yields high returns.
