Have a Great Day!

Have a Great Day!

According to the American Management Journal, researchers found that employees’ moods when they clocked in tended to affect how they felt the rest of the day. Their mood had a clear impact on performance, including both how much work they did and how well they did it.

This research doesn’t come as a great surprise to most of us, but most of us do little to improve our own mood, let alone the mood of others. But this week I attended a great closing keynote session, How to Have a Great Day Every Day by Steve Beck. I will admit I was not sure what to expect with the title which makes a big promise! But Steve dropped the mic, so to speak. He reminded the audience of how much control we really have in determining what kind of day we experience. He gave us some great practical take aways. Here are a few.

Steve quickly led off with how important your mind is when determining the kind of day we have. The only way to make changes in your life is to observe how you think, the thoughts we have will determine our success. He reminds us that we have a choice on how we think, we can choose to complain or we can choose to make it a Great Day Every day. Choice is important for our well-being because it gives us a sense of control over our lives. So, choose to have a great day. From the moment you wake up you can choose to make a conscious decision that your day will be a Great Day today.

“My mind is my biggest asset. I expect to win every tournament I play.”

~Tiger Woods

Here was another one, change the way you walk into work each day. Smile and say enthusiastically, “Hey, what is going on?” Get people fired up! Bring the energy, bring the passion and show folks you want to be there. According to the Psychological Bulletin, simply smiling can be a conscious, intentional choice and whether your smile is genuine or not, it can act on your body and mind in a variety of positive ways, offering benefits for your health, your mood, and even the moods of people around you. How you walk in to work each day – how you greet co-workers and customers – is a choice and can determine how Great your day will be.

Lastly, one of my favorite tools he shared was the use of positive affirmations. Affirming your day has to do with looking in the mirror and saying positive things that directly relate to your life, giving directions from the conscious mind to the unconscious mind. Give the subconscious mind clear directions and challenge any/all of the negative or unhelpful thoughts you might have. I call it planting the seeds for what you want more of in your life. “Today is a Great Day; I am at my best all day and all night.”

We all want to Have a Great Day Every Day and Steve reminds us that we can. We just need to put in the work and make good choices.

Choose well and Have a Great Day…Every Day!
