The Power of Attitude, Effort and Actions
“3 things you can control every day: 1. Attitude 2. Effort 3. Actions to be a great teammate.”
-Jon Gordon
Some people hate working. They spend more time looking for ways to get out of work than actually working. I believe we all truly value working with people who bring a great attitude to a job.
I remember one of my first summer jobs working at my high school where my dad was the principal. We had a small summer workforce of high school students. It was the first time I had experienced working with people who detested working. Their negative attitude seemed to come so naturally and without embarrassment. They dragged out work for hours and days wasting precious time and energy.
But then there was Tony. Tony was a few years ahead of me in school and his positive attitude was motivating. He actually appreciated working and didn’t spend his time complaining or hiding from work. I remember asking my dad if he would assign me to Tony’s team because he had such a good attitude. Tony showed me what good things could happen when you bring your best effort to work.
As a kid growing up playing football in the front yard, it was all about winning and who could score the touchdowns. Who could be the star of the game? When I joined the junior high football team it was still about winning, but I had to mature and realize it wasn’t about me scoring or being the star, it was all about doing my part to help the team be successful. It was about me doing whatever the coach assigned me to do and doing it with excellence.
“It’s all about teamwork. Sometimes you are the star and sometimes you help the star.”
-Jon Gordon
Tony was a team player, and he inspired team play as he quietly and quickly moved to get his work completed. That’s why I enjoyed working with him. There was no drama, just good timely results. At the end of the day, it was Tony’s attitude and effort that helped our school’s real stars, the students and the teachers, shine. Tony worked to make the facilities a great place to teach and learn.
Never underestimate the power of your attitude, effort and actions to be a great team player.
