The Leadership Edge Starts Here

I’ve spent much of my career outdoors creating amazing first impressions. I’ve supervised the planting of thousands of trees, mowed endless acres, and watched storms roll in and wreck a season’s worth of work.

Along the way, I’ve observed something that has nothing to do with plants and everything to do with people: The leadership edge isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you grow.

Great leaders come in many different forms, personalities, and skill sets. But after years of watching leaders, and trying to become a better one myself, I believe there is one characteristic that separates great leaders from the rest: Credibility.

People have to believe you.

Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner wrote a book called The Leadership Challenge. For more than four decades, they’ve asked people all over the world the same question: what do you look for in a leader you’d actually want to follow? The answer keeps coming back to the same four things:

Honest. Competent. Inspiring. Forward-looking.

Think about that.

Honest: I can trust you.
Competent: I can depend on you.
Inspiring: I want to follow you.
Forward-looking: I believe you know where we’re going.

Together, they create something every leader needs: credibility.

And credibility isn’t built with a speech. It’s built when your actions match your words.

You say you’ll make the call – and you make it.
You say people matter – and you treat them that way when you’re under pressure.
You establish a standard – and you hold yourself to it first.
You say something is important – and your calendar, decisions, and behavior prove it.

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2025 report found something worth sitting with: 70% of how engaged a team feels comes down to one person. Their manager. That’s a powerful reminder that leadership is personal. How we show up matters.

Your team is watching. And not necessarily to judge you, but to figure out what you really value. Your behavior gives them the answer.

So, what’s your leadership edge?

You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room. You don’t have to be the most charismatic. You don’t have to be perfect.

But if you want people to willingly follow you, give them a reason to believe you.

Know what you stand for.
Do what you say you’ll do.
And let your actions speak louder than your title.

That’s the leadership edge. And it starts with credibility.
