The Heart of the Giver
“The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious.”
~Martin Luther
That little baby in the manger came years ago and was greeted first by the service industry workers of his day, the shepherds who were working the fields. That really is special when I think about it. As it was in those days so is it today; the front-line workers are the ones making the first impressions, greeting others, and assisting behind the scenes. As the small baby took front stage in a humble local stable, it was the service industry that greeted this new child. It was later, that the wisemen came. I am sure that as those first shepherds arrived, they had little to give this child in way of material possessions, no gift. My own speculation is they gave of themselves, they gave their service, their voices and were attentive to the needs of the family.
What do you give someone who seems to have everything the world offers or what do you give a boss who you admire and respect? This week I got some nice treats from my employees and while my waistline does not need it, I always enjoy them! But one of the most significant gifts I received this year was a handwritten card from a thoughtful front-line staff member. As I re-read the note he wrote, I counted the word “thanks” 3 times. He mentioned specific areas he was thankful for at our workplace. He referred to when he felt trusted and an important part of what we are doing. His note was a very special gift to me.
This year, I hope you can provide someone in your life with a gift from your heart – your sincere words of gratitude and thanks. And, in the spirit of thanks, I want to thank you for leading and growing yourself. As we pause during this busy Christmastime, may you receive the true gift given to the world this season.
Blessings to you and your team,
Jeff
