Team Gifts

Team Gifts

There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being — to help another succeed.

It is the end of the Christmas season, New Year's Eve is upon us and giving/getting gifts is still a big part of the culture. Did you give your team anything? Without knowing your team, I hope you did, but I don’t necessarily mean a material gift, although I am sure that would have been nice. What I mean by giving is: Are you serving them well?

Years ago, I was working in Miami managing landscaping for a 300-acre high-end resort, marina, golf course, shopping mall and ocean club. It was a big job requiring several staff members and lots of different tools and equipment. I learned quickly that they needed a space to hold extra gloves, safety glasses and hand tools for their use. And while I often felt like a supply Sergeant in the Army, as the leader of the department, I knew it was my responsibility to make sure they didn’t run out of what they needed to do their job. Once I had a good supply room, I noticed the staff no longer had excuses but did their jobs quicker and better. I wanted them to succeed.

As a leader, one of the best gifts you can give your team is your service and attention in helping them succeed at their jobs. I like to ask myself this, “How can I assist our employees in reaching their full potential?”  Having this mindset frames the bigger picture which is providing them with the means to succeed. I want to equip them with the right tools, sure, but even more, I want to set the example for a productive mindset and attitude. No doubt, it takes an investment in resources and time, but the return to you and your team is huge. One of the best gifts you can give your team this season and all year long is focusing on their success.
