As we move from summer to fall weather, we can feel the crispness in the air.  Some perennials are beginning their slow shut-down that will get them through the cooler months.  Football season is underway, along with all the festivities that come with it. What does the fresh change from summer to autumn mean for you?  If you are one of the tens of thousands who are behind the scenes your life just got ramped up a notch.  It is your work that makes the “football festivities” a reality.  You are the unsung hero – doing your job so the big events happen – providing a pleasant experience for all.


During these extremely demanding times don’t forget to do one thing.  Make sure you do this – for yourself and for your family, friends and co-workers.  Take a break and get some rest!  Not a working holiday, but a full day away and off the cell phones and computers. Take the time to let your body, your mind and your soul rest.  Science  has provided some good research to support what we all already know:   You will be a better leader when you regularly take time to rest and refuel.

In the book, Sabbath, by Wayne Muller, he says, “If certain plant species, for example, do not lie dormant for winter, they will not bear fruit in the spring.  If this continues for more than a season, the plant begins to die.”  How much truer is this for leaders and our teams?  We can’t expect to produce good fruit if we are always busy and engaged.   We need a dormancy time, a day of rest.   If not, we are just grinding though with very little in the tank and that is not healthy – for us or our family, friends and co-workers.

During this busy fall season packed with hours of dealing with leaves, setting up for events and cleaning it all up, be sure to take time to rest.  Truly rest.  Reconnect with yourself, family, a book, God, your hobby, or something that allows you to step away from your day-to-day work.  Make sure you schedule your staff at least one day off too.  You will be a better leader and your organization will benefit.
