How Do I Get Buy-In?
Buy-In: To Own it
When teams distrust their leader and can’t get on board with the instructions they give, people feel that it’s time to get another leader. When the leader talks too much and promises this-and-that and doesn’t deliver, it’s very hard to get buy-in. Why?
John C. Maxwell writes, “Every message that people receive is filtered through the messenger who delivers it. If you consider the messenger to be credible, then you believe the message has value.”
James Kouzes and Barry Posner have conducted ongoing research for over 25 years, across 6 continents to see just what people are looking for from their leaders. This has involved well over 100,000 people from around the globe. What they found is that honesty is the top characteristic for a good leader. Here’s a simple tip: Be honest. Do what you say you will do, model the behavior you ask of others, never deceive, but be authentic and true.
Like Maxwell Kouzes and Posner believe “If you don’t believe in the messenger, you won’t believe the message.”
If you are honest, free of deceit and untruthfulness, sincere, competent, trustworthy and have good chemistry with people, getting buy-in is much easier.
Keep it simple, be honest.
